| Description: | International Conference Manchester Centre for Regional History Manchester Metropolitan University 19 - 21 July 2005
Elizabeth Gaskell is the nineteenth century’s most important novelist of industrial society. Her era was of considerable importance in the making of the modern world. This international conference will explore Gaskell’s intellectual and cultural context and how her literary legacy informs cultural regeneration. It occurs at a particularly appropriate time, as Manchester applies for World Heritage status.
The conference has been organized in conjunction with the Gaskell Society. The academic distinction and excellent facilities of Manchester Metropolitan University, on its site near the centre of the city, and the established tradition of lively Gaskell Society events promise to provide a stimulating and enjoyable combination.
The fifty speakers will include Jenny Uglow, biographer of Elizabeth Gaskell; Julian Treuherz from Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery speaking in the Great Hall of Manchester Town Hall; the academic Linda Hughes; author and Victorian specialist Martin Hewitt; and Malcolm Cooper from English Heritage. The conference will cover the literary, social, cultural and environmental importance of Gaskell and our heritage today, with a wide range of speakers from the UK and overseas.
There will be displays, bookstalls, walks and excursions, the launch of the new Pickering and Chatto edition of the works of Elizabeth Gaskell, and an opportunity to visit her home at 84 Plymouth Grove.
The conference fees are modest and flexible, due to the generous sponsorship of English Heritage, and accommodation close to Manchester Metropolitan University is available at a reasonable cost.
